results for 3 and 4, and series overall, will be posted as soon as i get things emptied out of my car and sorted out.

glad everyone had a good time and nearly everyone walked away with at least one door prize. who walked away with TWO brand new helmets? that's insane! :)

keg stands, bush peeing (including squatting!), and tree climbing, whichever of you folks left early after the awards ceremony, missed the best part of the whole series.

johann? what are you going to do next weekend???

xmas with your FIVE kiddies.

looking forward to next year. i think the difference this year, between it being a load of work and heartache for yours truly, and totally enjoying the series myself, was:

it's over!! another SLC cross series has come to an end and i want to thank everyone that came out! the racers for coming out and well, racing, as this was what it was all about. i hope ya'll had a great time and if there's anything you would like to see done differently, please let us know.
the volunteers, without them there is no series. mark for the sound and running registration, even after back surgery, tony for helping and scoring, roy for helping score, jamie for helping at registration and scoring, rick s. for the same, eddie for being our official signature, blake for helping breakdown, rc for pictures, susan for everything, the sponsors (bikes plus, rb's and outdoors) and mostly my son nik for coming out to help set up, break down, run the grill, run errands, thank you!
and to my friend Jeff, i'm glad you decided to do this again and i had a blast as your co-promoter in training, thank you!

ok, i'm tired and going to bed now, more to be added later and jeff should have full results posted soon. wow, i can't believe it's over, what am i going to do next weekend? it won't quite be the same not having a cross series to help run and seeing everyone 3 weekends in a row. ya'll made this special, thanks again and this is johann signing off!

by the way, i plan to keep this web blog running so anything ya'll have to do with 'cross let us know and we'll post it and keep it rolling.

i have three new ones, and one established icon.

1) joel

joel, where the heck did this speed come from? after racing ss and kicking tail, you came back out and stayed with the A race leaders for many laps, with gears. hook me up with your coach. i'm devastatingly impressed with your performances. unreal.

2) marky mark. a day after surgery to repair a ruptured disc, you're out there playing with the band. and two days later, running registration, music, and the grill. you are my #1 non-racing hero, of all time. THAT is the most inspiring thing i have ever seen. and the most selfless. you're my new favorite person.

3) johann. my best friend. shy about running the series, about taking the reins, before he got them in his eager hands. now he's out of control. "stop breaking down the course, it's time for beer and to hang out with friends." but he would not...

and at the start line, he's a natch'. much talk, good stuff, comfortable in front of the peeps. and at the scoring line, cheering EVERYONE on, one by one. and at the finish line, which he so soulfully crafted atop a nice, grassy, soft climb, bringing the best out of everyone, and looking for more.

i consider johann my best friend for a reason.

4) established icon: rhonda jacoby. i was impressed by your 'cross race showing last year. but i was more impressed to see you ride that century. and your performance and perseverance this year is nothing short of phenominal. i have more respect for you than, well...

'cross brings out the best in people.

5) honorable mention: big tony brown. you have a love of the sport that is unrivaled. and a brilliant mind. i could talk to you all day long.

'cross is spiritual for me these days, i know that's sap, but it's true. what a great sharing of everything, breaking down of walls between "cliques", and embodiment of the spirit of competition and friendship.

ladies, prepare for turbo-charged competition next week. Susan Williams will be back from racing nat's in RI, where the weather was evidently completely insane.

alongside Susan, you will get a wake-up call from my bestest bud, elite racer from Baltimore, Heidi, representing the Alan team. get a good look at her sweet carbon Alan at the start line, that may be the last you see of it.

i've heard from our friends in Carbondale and they expect to be back down for another punishing session next weekend.

bad news is, Marky Mark's keg ran dry last weekend. since we've had keggers the last two weekends, what kind of host would i be to short-change you this weekend? :)

so come on out for a keg of Killian's (if it arrives in time, otherwise we'll have bud light or something skunky), picnic food, and tunes from DJ Mark.

weather saturday is supposed to be 40*F high and they are predicting snow/rain at 30%. same for sunday, but only a 10% chance for precip. dress warm and huddle around the keg.

my fault: the trophies were ordered a wee bit late, they're due to arrive UPS at my office on friday. if anybody has connections with Mr. Brown Shorts (UPS), swing a little favor our way.

i'm sorry to say there will be no hubcap trophies this year. i am in a strange place with the series right now, trying to wrap my head around what's missing, and cannot seem to include hubcaps in the picture. many of the ones i have were picked up for me by a special person while she was riding her bike. she is gone, and for now, the hubcaps along with her.

prizes, hopefully trophies, food and beverages, sicko debauchery, and as much pain as you can handle, on sunday. we'll include all the tricks you've seen before, and a few more, on this wicked course. and maybe have podium girls, i'm not sure yet.

and we could use a photog volunteer. bueller? bueller? bueller?

thanks to everyone for participating, and thanks especially to our staff of volunteers. you guys make it happen.

Note of interest: Russ ran a good portion of the last lap, carrying/pushing
the bike, with a mechanical. He shouted, "You bastards!!!", as Joel blew by

SLC #2 went off yesterday with some great racing on a just under 1 mile brutal course. weather was good with sun and no rain, only a chilly wind, a good day for racing. and after numerous requests for some single track it was able to make an appearance in two small sections (one with a nasty short hill climb that noone was able to ride up or even attempted) to keep all on their toes. the rest was some good gravel roads, some climbing, the lake levee and oh yeah, some more climbing!

the 'C' race was taken this week by Jim N. who has really been working hard on his cross bike and looks to getting the hang of it pretty well. he moved from 4th last week to 1st - great job! last week's winner Hugh snapped a chain link on his first lap and while we cut and spliced his chain he lost too much time (sorry about that hugh - will have tools ready next week) to catch back up with front group.

Single Speed was won by Boomer on his SS mtb bike. it was good to have him back out again and he and teammate Russ duelled all day long with Joel on his fixie ss taking 3rd.

Womans was won again by Lea who is really looking strong. the guys better watch out if she decides to jump in the 'B' class!

the 'B' class was won by Blake R. who missed the first week but made up for lost ground by pulling away on the first lap and never looking back. a very strong race. 2nd was the much improving Ronny B. who looks set to make run at #1 next weekend. last weeks winner Lance battled shoulder problems from last weeks race crash and this course was not a course to take on injured. another week to heal and he should be running strong for next week.

'A' race this week was won by Russ in a two man uphill grind sprint against his teammate Boomer. i told ya they duked it out all day with each taking one race. Joel took 3rd with last weeks winner Mike unable to make the drive back down and 2nd place Thad missing yesterday's course. if you're reading this Thad, you missed a course that you would have really liked! hope you and Mike make it back out next weekend!

last week i secured the park for sure and talked with the TN state USAC/TBRA rep, mailed in the apps (late) and a check, and we're waiting for approval. Bikes Plus provided a HUGE box of goodies for prizes and i've got an eye on both the trophy catalogue (you know they'll be fun) and the case of old hubcaps in my garage. update as soon as i hear back from USAC.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Smells Like Cross website. Here we will be updating everything you need to know about this great cyclocross series in the very near future. But to get everyone started here is some basic info.

Dates - Dec 4, Dec 11, Dec 17 &18

Place - Lakeland Managerial Park

Event Classification - A race (cat 1/2/3 or expert norba), B race (cat 4/5 or sport norba), C race (all beginners), Womens race (all combined), Single Speed (all combined)

Time - 11:00am for B/C/Womens/SS
12:00 noon for A

$15 per race on race day OR sign up for all 4 at the first race for $50. Registration will open at 10am on race dates. And as this is a USCF event, road or norba license required. 1 day and annual license will be available at registration. Please note - 1 day lic is now $10 as per USCF.

Prizes a plenty! Food and drink after each event. Music and entertainment provided by DJ Marky Mark Yoshida.

and yes, volunteers needed! mainly for breakdown (not breakdancing)!
